My first post reviewing a Farmers Market is for a market that doesn’t actually give itself the title of ‘Farmers Market’ but it has one of the best & largest range of fresh fruit and veggies I have seen at a Farmers Market in ages so I’m going to say that it counts.
About 3 weeks ago, Klutch & I flew to Melbourne because we had a short film playing in the Peninsula Short Film Festival on Victoria’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula (We won Best Animation – YAY!). We spent Friday wandering around the city and strolled a few blocks from our hotel to Queen Victoria Markets.
We walked into the first section which was indoors and there is a wide corridor with shop fronts on either side. You can’t go into the shops but their wide array of foods was on show and customers are served at the counters. Each shop had its own specialty including coffee, spices, chocolate, olives, cheese, bread, pastries and cured meats. The wide corridor looped back around until we came back to where we started.
At either end you could either go into another section of meats & seafood (nothing there for me) or you could go out the other end to the undercover fruit and veg section. This area was really large – I’m hopeless at judging space so I won’t even try but it was big. The array of fruit and veg and herbs was fantastic and most of the prices were really cheap.
The first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful vibrant yellow of Champagne Watermelon. I have never seen this and would have loved to try it but there isn’t much you can do with half a watermelon and a hotel bar fridge so I had to forget that idea.
I loved the variety of tomatoes you could buy which unfortunately I have never seen close to home. Apart from that, the produce itself was that same as any regular farmers market but the price were much better than markets near my home and the volume was bigger.
I would love to have this market near my home and if I did, I would probably pop by 2 or 3 times a week to always have fresh fruit and veggies on hand.
There is also a really nice flower stall just outside the veggie hall and another large hall full of clothes, shoes, toys etc.. We wandered through this section pretty quickly as it didn’t appeal to us at all but it depends on what you like – you might love this section.
The markets are open 7 days a week from 6am every day except Sunday which is 9am and they are located at 513 Elizabeth Street in Melbourne CBD. Overall, I was really happy with the farmers market section of Queen Victoria Markets and a bit sad that I can’t shop there every day.
